The Cloverfield Paradox: Julius Onah

Maybe it wasn't a good idea to make a big brouhaha about Julius Onah's The Cloverfield Project being released on Netflix on Superbowl Sunday after the end of the game. It put way too much attention on a film that should never have been scrutinized as some epic work of sci-fi. The film is a decent, though cliched and predictable, piece of "Space is Hard" cinema. There's some decent character work and I've always loved the idea of people being trapped in the wrong dimensions. (Thank you DC Comics' Power Girl!) Some of the special effects are nice, particularly the scene where Chris O'Dowd's arm gets stuck in the fluid-like wall before it's severed off. But something about the whole thing doesn't add up. This film should never have been attached to the Cloverfield franchise, particularly on the tail of 10 Cloverfield Land (2016), one of the best straight-up thrillers in recent years.

5/10
