How? How could a movie about a mad scientist using a werewolf to kill his enemies be so BORING? Sam Newfield's The Mad Monster is a disappointing slog not just because of the vapid execution of its plot, but because the film clearly had some talented people working on it. The sets are pleasantly creepy and atmospheric (it's just too bad that there were maybe only two of them). The cinematography was also surprisingly decent by Poverty Row standards. One early sequence where the mad scientist has an argument with the ghostly specters of four of his contemporaries was rather impressive considering the technological limitations of the time. Tragically, the rest of the film can't compete. The pacing is all over the place, the characters are woefully stock, and all of the performances are nauseatingly wooden.
