Multiple Maniacs: John Waters

John Waters' Multiple Maniacs succeeds in being as horrifically blasphemous, gross, and trashy and possible. The anal penetration scene with Divine and Mink Stole in the church was...a scene, I suppose. But there's the thing: it isn't as interesting as it might want to be. It has a solid opening with the Cavalcade of Perversion and the visions of religious ecstacy. And the rape scene with the giant lobster is among the most bizarre and memorable of Waters' entire career. But much of the movie just DRAGS. So much of the film, especially in the middle, is just the characters talking to each other. And though Waters' dialogue is charming, I've found it works best in small doses and one-liners, not prolonged conversations.

5/10
