The Beguiled: Sofia Coppola

Wait, THIS is what lost to Ruben Östlund's The Square for the Palme d'Or?! Madness! Sofia Coppola's The Beguiled is a many-layered, breathtakingly beautiful film that easily stands as the best I've seen (so far) from this past year's main slate at Cannes. I think what intrigues me the most is Coppola's depiction of violence: it really reflects her father's obsession with extreme violence juxtaposed against highly mannered societies like the Corleone family. But she makes the technique and this story, adapted from Thomas P. Cullinan's novel, her own. It's a stirring feminist polemic and marvelous slow-burn erotic melodrama/thriller.

8/10
