What a surreal documentary. I can appreciate Chris Hegedus and D.A. Pennebaker's The War Room for its surface qualities--documenting the campaign headquarters responsible for Bill Clinton's landslide presidential victory in 1992. But as someone sitting in the middle of the 2016 election cycle, it's one of the strangest things imaginable: James Carville in jeans and T-shirts; baby-faced George Stephanopoulos playing phone tag; the Gennifer Flowers scandal eerily predicting the Monica Lewinsky scandal; and relative civility between the various candidates (emphasis on relative). It's so strange so see how an election worked before the internet and iPhones--at one point Carville and his staff scramble to identify and get their hands on a two-week old news broadcast from Brazil that could potentially damage Bush's campaign. And the fashion...oh, the fashion...
