Evilspeak: Eric Weston

Here's a great piece of advertising for Eric Weston's Evilspeak: Anton LaVey, the founder of the Church of Satan, was a fan of the film. Considering the fact that the film is about a bullied military academy student named Stanley Coopersmith (Clint Howard) who invokes Satan to exact his revenge on his wicked classmates and teachers, I don't think that a higher recommendation exists. I've heard the film described as being a male version of Stephen King's "Carrie." And I think to an extent that comparison is logical. The classmates and teachers are practically cartoonish in their sadistic enthusiasm in torturing Stanley. The film builds and builds and builds until an explosive climax there Stanley gains powers and slays his tormentors. Indeed, these last 20 minutes of the film are so captivating that they redeem the film's various technical flaws. These include things like characters who randomly drop in and out of the movie, frequently incompetent audio editing, and occasional plot holes (is there an explanation for why Stanley's computer seemingly becomes sentient?). But again, when viewed as a whole, Evilspeak is an incredible experience. It's a shame that Howard has remained under the shadow of his brother Ron. His performance as Stanley is nothing short of inspired and demonstrates that he has substantial acting talent.

7/10
