Project Moon Base: Richard Talmadge
For all of its faults, I can't hate Richard Talmadge's Project Moon Base. The film has ambition, dammit! Maybe it had a lot to do with the input of Robert A. Heinlein, but the film was a breath of fresh air from the morass of 50s low-budget sci-fi films. There are scenes aboard an orbiting space-station where crew-members walk and sit on the walls, floor, and ceiling (sometimes in the same shot) that are absolutely brilliant for their time. Including so many prominent women of power in a 50s B-movie couldn't have been an easy task, but I applaud the film for following through with it. But for all of its effort, it is still bogged down by the problems and prejudices that plagued so many of its contemporaries: cheap model effects; lengthy scenes of static exposition; and the main female protagonist is essentially shooed to a corner in the last act. But again, the film gets major points for trying. Side note: it's nice to see that in the future we've invented bras that keep breasts sharp and pointy as rockets even while they undergo multiple G's during spaceflight take-offs.
