Deranged: Jeff Gillen, Alan Ormsby
Don't let the fact that this film has a "professional" narrator convince you that this is anything other than an exploitation film. Deranged, a retelling of the crimes of infamous serial killer Ed Gein, takes a gleeful joy in exploring his warped psyche and recreating many of the crimes which he unleashed on an unsuspecting populace. Gein, who is referred to in this film as Ezra Cobb, is actually portrayed as a very sympathetic character. Early in the film, he is shown spoon-feeding his dying mother and crying over her corpse. Alas...his mother's twisted religious beliefs convinced Gein that women were evil. Soon, he started to believe that his mother was crying out to him from the grave. So he exhumed her corpse and began to use other cadavers to replace her rotting body. Soon, he is spurred on to murder. Amazingly, Cobb confesses his crimes several times to people. However, they blow him off, thinking that it is part of some sick joke. Cobb is depicted as being driven by inner demons who refuse to give him a moment's rest. But, as I said, this is an exploitation film. Special effects wizard Tom Savini created some of the most gruesome make-up and gore effects imaginable. But, to give directors Jeff Gillen and Alan Ormsby credit, they do everything in their power to make Cobb and three-dimensional character and not just a mindless sociopath.
