Veronika Voss: Rainer Werner Fassbinder

[Revisit Review]

Re-watching Rainer Werner Fassbinder's Veronika Voss, I must have started and stopped watching it about five times because I know and dread what comes at the end. To me, that's one of the marks of great filmmaking. The destruction of Veronika Voss, the murder of Henriette, the tampering of the crime scene...it makes me so physically angry that I could barely stand to watch it again. But in addition to its magnificent story, the film is heart-achingly beautiful. Is it hyperbole to say that Xaver Schwarzenberger's black-and-white cinematography is some of the most colorful ever committed to film? I doubt it. Fassbinder's neo-Hollywood film grammar is also fascinating and makes his premature death a few months after the film's release all the more tragic.

10/10
