Whew! That was a close one! For a second there I almost gave up on Mike Flanagan's Hush. There's a scene near the end that almost made me rage-quit where the killer stalking deaf novelist Maddie Young finally catches up to her and bludgeons her to death. But after he kills her, the scene cuts away to show that it was just Maddie imagining her demise. I hate it when films do that. But Flanagan cleverly used this intrusive scene to begin an extended sequence where she imagines all of her options to fend off the killer. Somehow, it works. Thank goodness, too, because Hush is a great thriller with a wonderful central concept: a deaf person being stalked by a murderer. Sometimes the cinematography gets a bit too dark for my tastes, but it maintains its momentum and intensity.
