Girlfriend's Day: Michael Stephenson

What an odd mess of a film. At least Michael Stephenson's Girlfriend's Day is mercifully short. It's one of those movies centered on a single joke. In the case of this film, said joke is: what if people took greeting cards really, really, really seriously? At first it seems like the film will be about an ex-greeting card writer and his downward spiral. But then it becomes a darkly comic film noir where an unsuspecting palooka gets roped into things he'd rather not get roped into. None of it really works; the romantic side-plot is trite. But man, Bob Odenkirk is hypnotic. He reminds me of Robin Williams in his dramatic roles--able to channel unspeakable pathos and pain with a silent look.

5/10
