The Scar: Krzysztof Kieślowski

Despite being only his second fiction film, Krzysztof Kieślowski's The Scar demonstrates his proclivity for darkness. Entire rooms are washed out in shadows which swallow all colors. The outdoors seem muted and washed out. The most interesting thing about The Scar is its visuals. There are brilliant cinematic flourishes: wet pictures being slapped onto a bathroom mirror; a static montage of trees being cut down for a forest; Party members feeding a deer a cigarette. But by and large, The Scar doesn't have any real fire in its belly. Intellectually sound, it doesn't have a drop of emotion anywhere in it. And unfortunately, its occasional beauty can't salvage its sterility.
