Dersu Uzala: Akira Kurosawa

[Revisit Review]

The first time I saw Akira Kurosawa's Dersu Uzala, I thought it was achingly beautiful and moving but somewhat stagnant. Having re-watched it, I now feel re-affirmed on both points. There are moments of exquisite, heart-aching beauty (the long shot of the sun and the moon), but the film begins to bloat under its non-existent structure while the rigid mise-en-scène deflates any sense of momentum. I admire how Kurosawa almost completely eschewed close-ups in favor of long shots that emphasized men as features of a larger environment. But it did little to make it a captivating experience. The charms of Dersu Uzala are almost completely cerebral.

7/10
