A Woman's Secret isn't a Nicholas Ray film. He may have directed it, but there is not a single frame of A Woman's Secret that suggests his style of filmmaking or artistic intent. It is a dry, dull, and tedious motion picture that was obviously made with Ray on auto-pilot. The film is actually a bit like Joseph L. Mankiewicz's All About Eve (1950) in that it follows an aging female star and her young rival. Well, it would be like All About Eve if Bette Davis had virtually forced Anne Baxter into show business and attempted to kill her when she pleaded to leave. So...I guess it isn't anything like All About Eve, after all. Not that it matters. A Woman's Secret frames the trajectories of both women via a murder mystery after the eldest apparently shoots the youngest. At least, that is what the film leads us to believe until the last 10 minutes when it suddenly changes directions and...guh...I can't remember. A Woman's Secret is so uninteresting that it's an anti-film; you forget it while still watching it.
