After searching for LITERALLY 5-6 years, I've finally found a copy of Ritwik Ghatak's SUBARNAREKHA (1965). This film has the austere beauty and pictorial tranquility of Satyajit Ray as well as an earnest emotionalism that seems shocking even today.

I mean, I wish this copy didn't have WHITE SUBTITLES that disappeared into the characters' costumes and the foreground, but beggars can't be choosers.

One of my favorite details in this film is the pervasive knowledge among its cast that the rest of the world is moving into the future while post-colonial India struggles to revive itself: Germans are reinventing engineering, Soviets are putting men in space, etc, etc.
7/10
