A Better Tomorrow: John Woo

[Revisit Review]

Though John Woo would go on to perfect the heroic bloodshed genre with such films as The Killer (1989) and Hard Boiled (1992), A Better Tomorrow has an undeniable power. It has a simple earnestness (aided in no small part by the wonderful soundtrack that sounds almost like Nino Rota and Ennio Morricone had a Hong Kong love-child) and a fierce style that make it delightful even in its heavier moments. But unlike his later films, A Better Tomorrow doesn't feel like an action movie, but a very intense drama broken up with the occasional action scene.

8/10
