[Revisit Review]
Don Pietro Pellegrini is one of the most noble and heroic priests in the history of cinema. Not particularly warm or loving, he is nonetheless a man of overflowing faith and compassion. Even after the Nazis torture one of his friends to death and order his execution, he bursts into tears after he curses them. Why? I'd like to think it was because he remembered that they, too, are children of God. Aldo Fabrizi's performance is gut-wrenching and heart-breaking. There is never a moment when we question his sincerity or conviction.
