Destroy All Monsters: Ishirō Honda
Ishirō Honda's Destroy All Monsters was a dream come true: most of Toho's kaiju roster join together for what can only truly be described as an orgy of destruction. The film had a much bigger budget than the other Godzilla sequels of the time, and it shows. All of the special effects are outstanding: the costumes look great (even Minilla looks alright), the fight scenes are excellent (especially the King Ghidorah free-for-all), the models used for the various wrecked cities and science/military bases are well constructed (even if they all become strangely depopulated whenever the kaiju show up), and the spaceships and UFOs used by the ubiquitous human/alien bystanders all look fantastic. It was also interesting to see an instance where humans and kaiju legitimately had to work together to defeat a common threat...and succeeded. It's usually one or the other who ends up on top. The scenes focusing on the human characters drag on too long, much as they always do in kaiju films. But whenever the men in rubber suits show up it's pure cinematic magic.
