Female Trouble: John Waters

John Waters' Female Trouble in many ways feels like a warm-up for Waters' Serial Mom, in that it's obsessed with America's own obsession with criminals and murderers and how, in Waters' words, the country mistakes infamy for fame. But perhaps the best way to enjoy Female Trouble is just to sit agog and admire its insanity. The "Crime is Beauty" philosophy is among the most intriguing in Waters' career, and Divine lives up to it with one of her best performances, particularly after the acid attack that leaves her character grotesquely scarred and disfigured. The scene at the end where she performs for the crowded auditorium by doing trampoline tricks before asking "Who wants to die for art?" may be the greatest in her career, even more than the infamous last shot of Pink Flamingos.
