The Ladykillers: Alexander Mackendrick
[Revisit Review]
Alexander Mackendrick's The Ladykillers has the complex plotting and seemingly effortless ability to execute its narrative without becoming obtuse or cluttered that partially defined the American screwball comedy. Watching the film again, I couldn't help but think that this would make an excellent companion piece to Frank Capra's Arsenic and Old Lace (1944). Both films involve people meeting untimely ends thanks to their interactions with seemingly benign old ladies. But American screwball comedies rarely got as cheerfully dark as The Ladykillers. This film is a fiendish joy from start to finish.
