Rupture: Jean-Claude Carrière, Pierre Étaix
Rupture takes a simple idea—a spurned lover trying to write a break-up letter whose things keep breaking on him—and wrings every single bit of comedy imaginable out of it. It is, in a word, bliss. This is precision slapstick the likes of which only the French comedians like Jacques Tati and René Clair truly excelled at (although Chaplin came damn close with Modern Times [1936]). What would be a better term for this? "Surgical Slapstick?" I'll have to think on it...But anyhow, my favorite part is the hokey sound effects which were created and dubbed in by Étaix after filming had concluded. They are so wild and over-the-top that they almost reach surrealistic heights.
