House: Nobuhiko Obayashi

[Revisit Review]

Huh. You know, Nobuhiko Obayashi's House isn't nearly as bizarre and indecipherable as I originally thought. It's basically a bare-bones slasher film: a group of teenagers get killed off by a ghost in a haunted mansion. That's it, really. I guess the first time that I watched the film I was disoriented by how delightfully weird the whole thing was. But now that I knew what to expect from this Dadaist slasher, I could enjoy the plot itself. But first and foremost I love how artificial everything is. Rarely do you see a film so gleefully embrace its own superficiality.

7/10
