Pardon me, but I have a quick question: if you are a group of scientists operating in a world where Godzilla and other gigantic monsters run amok, why would you conduct your highly radioactive experiments on an island that you know for a fact is populated by giant praying mantises? Such questions of basic logic have never been very high priorities in the Godzilla franchise. But this quandary from Jun Fukuda's Son of Godzilla bothered me more than usual. But regardless, Son of Godzilla ended up being much less painful than I originally thought it would be. Yes, Minilla was a terrible idea. Even worse was the transformation of a great iconic monster into the role of hapless babysitter-cum-parent. But with the exception of the Godzilla and Minilla suits, the special effects in this film were surprisingly good. Some of the process shots that juxtaposed the humans with the kaiju were actually pretty good. Though basic in concept and design, the Kamacuras and Kumonga costumes (puppets??) looked fantastic and genuinely frightening. The climactic battle where Godzilla, Minilla, and Kumonga fight in a snow-storm may easily be the best fight scene from this era of Godzilla movies; and certainly it is the most visually arresting one.
