[Revisit Review]
I protest the idea that Alejandro Jodorowsky's Santa Sangre is a horror film. It can be horrifying, but it's much more than that. It isn't just a parade of grotesqueries. There are real emotions at play here. When the clowns take part in the elephant’s funeral procession and spray tears out of their eyes, it’s tragic. Even the scene where Orgo gives Fenix his tattoo is emotionally meaningful. For a brief moment, we see the father express love for his son; a twisted, destructive love, but perhaps the only kind of love he could ever express. Jodorowsky's films all demonstrate a love of images and symbols, but it's his love of characters that surprised me the most in this film.
