Hairspray: John Waters

I've never seen the 2007 Adam Shankman remake of the Broadway musical remake of John Waters' Hairspray. But now I'll have to check it out, because if it's anywhere near as enjoyable, silly, yet emotional as the original, it can't be half bad. It's so weird seeing a John Waters' film that doesn't contain any sex scenes or murders. It's so weird seeing a John Waters' film with the New Line Cinema logo before the opening credits. It's so weird seeing a John Waters' film with actual actors and celebrities. It's so weird seeing a John Waters' film where said actual actors and celebrites act alongside Dreamlanders! It's such a surreal experience, yet the film is so gleefully inclusive, warm-hearted, and entertaining that it keeps you engaged even as you try and figure out what's going on.

8/10
