I suspect that many people these days don't have the attention span or patience for Bill Forsyth's Local Hero. And what a shame that is. It is a simple film about a simple community full of simple people. It is a comedy, but the laughs come gradually and organically and are rarely shoved to the forefront in the same manner as most comedies. If I have made Local Hero out to seem prosaic or tedious, then allow me to set the record straight: it is a wonderful film brimming with warmth and humanity. Even the ostensible "villain," an American oil magnate who sends the protagonist to the sleepy Scottish village of Ferness isn't demonized or ostracized. Instead, he ends the film having essentially been accepted into the arms of the community he wanted to destroy to make way for an oil refinery. Local Hero is a charming film and a true delight.
