The Angry Red Planet was made in a more innocent time. It was a time when rockets to other planets could land standing up like they were ready for launch. It was a time when we honestly believed that mars was full of life and terrifying creatures. And most importantly, it was a time when writers and film-makers weren't afraid to tell far fetched, crazy tales of sci-fi horror and terror. The Angry Red Planet is a thoroughly preposterous tale about a group of scientists who travel to Mars for the first time and discover that the Red Planet is full of the aforementioned terrifying creatures that lurk in such films. Director Ib Melchior used the CineMagic technique to make all of the exterior shots on Mars look bright red. This effect, while hokey and campy, allowed for them to insert animated footage of magnificent monsters without making it obvious that they weren't live action creatures. The film drags on like many sci-fi movies of the era with too much time spent in the cockpit of the space ship and in the control rooms of Earth. But it's still a fascinating little piece of 50s sci-fi.
