Film Hawk: JJ Garvine, Tai Parquet
So, how have I never heard of Bob Hawk before? And how has he gone so unnoticed that not only does he have no Wikipedia page, but his top listing on his scanty IMDb page is for “Thanks” on Kevin Smith’s film Chasing Amy (1997)? On the one hand, JJ Garvine and Tai Parquet’s documentary Film Hawk completely achieves its goal in informing audiences not only about Bob Hawk and his extraordinary life, but in making them angry that he has gone so unrecognized. But on the other hand, the film feels curiously underwhelming. There’s almost no footage from the movies he helped get off the ground. Somehow, that doesn’t feel right. Also, it turns out that his demanding preacher father wholeheartedly embraced his son's homosexuality...in the 50s!! How do you relegate that to a post-script text crawl?
