Hôtel Monterey: Chantal Akerman

Blow me down! I've found a Chantal Akerman film that I actually kind of like! Only in hindsight, though--I don't think I'd ever want to watch it again, mind you. But I was struck by two things. First, the cinematography was brilliant: delicately framed, warmly lighted—it seems like a series of still lifes. I don't know if it was wise to linger on certain shots of hallways and elevators for minutes at a time, but at least the imagery was striking. Second, I actually like the structure of examining a run-down, cheap hotel from the bottom to the top, occasionally stopping in at certain rooms to examine various social outcasts. This felt like structuralism with a purpose beyond such abstracts as "redefining the act of looking or seeing."
