Lantana: Ray Lawrence

Ray Lawrence's Lantana is a film founded on the bedrock of Anthony LaPaglia's performance as a police detective who self-medicates anhedonia with explosive rage and an affair he doesn’t truly care about. When he tells his wife that he had an affair, he says it was because he just feels numb. That kind of emotional honesty is rare in films, even in heady, meaty ones like Lantana which focus on loss, love, and guilt. Without LaPaglia, the film would be just another mopey film about listless middle-aged adults; not even its hyperlink format could save it from a general sense of tediousness. But it's LaPaglia that keeps us invested and interested in the film, even when we think we've figured out where it's going.

7/10
