The Master: Paul Thomas Anderson

Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master might be the single most challenging film of the director's entire career, even more than Inherent Vice (2014), a film which deliberately tries to have as little to do with a cohesive, comprehensible narrative as possible. The Master sits on your chest and brain like a weight, daring you to try and comprehend its heady philosophical quandaries. Each shot feels like a painting, creating the impression that the film isn't so much a film as a trip down a moving art gallery. The three central performances by Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Amy Adams rank among the best of their respective careers. People say this movie is about Scientology. That may be, but even more so it's a film about why broken people are drawn to cults and why so few are able to escape before it's too late.

8/10
